Working for Imam Suhaib Webb

Quick newsflash: Thanks to Allah, I now have a small role on the wonderful site of Imam Suhaib Webb. Forgive me for the recycled wordplay, but it is the Greatest Muslim Webbsite.

I’m an editor - checking for spelling mistakes - alongside 20 other magnificent Muslims who work more efficiently, and a Managing Editor who is one of the most polite people online -> Rhonda Rageb, as’salam alaikum!

Who is Suhaib Webb?

"Shaykh Suhaib Webb is a contemporary American Muslim activist and speaker. After converting to Islam, Webb left his career as a DJ and studied at the University of Central Oklahoma, where he graduated with a Bachelors degree in Education. He also studied privately under a Senegalese Shaykh, learning enough Islam and Arabic to become a community leader in Oklahoma City, where he was hired as Imam at the Islamic Society of Greater Oklahoma City. He simultaneously started teaching at Mercy School, an Islamic K-12 school in Oklahoma City. In 2004, he departed with his wife and children to Cairo, where he currently studies at Al-Azhar University in the College of Shari`ah. Additionally, he is in charge of the English translation Department at Dar al-Ifta al-Masriyah and is currently training as a Mufti. Webb strongly advocates for an articulation of American Islam that is authentic, and has leaders that are acutely aware of the issues facing Muslim Americans." {READ MORE HERE} The Webbsite includes personal stories, short accounts of historical figures and Islamic sessions that are compact, easy to digest and remember. With each article you learn practical ‘ilm (knowledge) to implement and re-evaluate your life. Suhaib Webb’s site was also awarded the Bestest Muslim Blog for 2009, proof that their huge audience are paying attention.

Why Suhaib Webb is important?

Imam Suhaib Webb is what I like to call an ‘Iconic Muslim’. His chief-like personality meshed with drive for Muslimness reminds me of a cool ‘Umar ibn al-khattab, a companion of the Prophet Muhammad. Imam Suhaib (I can’t call him brother yet, that’s too personal) has led a life in both worlds – tasting darkness and thriving in the light. Because of this, he has wisdom and experience which other Muslims aren’t aware of, and need to know. He is also a member of the Al-Maghrib Institute, a university-type organization that hosts seminars internationally, teaching Muslims to study and learn the Quran. I attended an Al-Maghrib course in January.

Why is working for/with Suhaib Webb important?

Such Iconic Muslims survive on two things: primarily on the guidance and reward from Allaah, and to a lesser extent support from the Ummah. Just like the Prophet Muhammad, if armies are sent against Iconic Muslims, their trust in Allah defeats opposition. On the other hand, following, sharing ideas with and learning from Iconic Muslims balances out the scales of knowledge and responsibility towards others. Too often we mere Muslims expect divine light from our scholarly leaders, assuming they will sacrifice their lives for us. That’s a weak idealogy. I for one learn from and deeply respect Imam Suhaib. Having a role on his Webbsite means I’m more involved with the team’s efforts in teaching Islam, aiming for the same uniting goals, promoting and learning from the beautifully educating articles, and hopefully able to convert others to Suhaib-Land.

I’ll end with a profound Imam Suhaib Webb message:

“I’m your brother, no more, no less.”

And that’s exactly how it should be.

  1. *Hyperventilates* omA you work for Imam Webb!! - He is one of the coolest guys around in our global community and especially in terms of the education-side of things. My first exposure to the well-informed and funny Imam Webb was when I was gifted a copy of the "Mothers of The Believers" series on CD, which he narrates and is super excellent. I have also been following his site/blog for maybe 6-7 months or so and there have been such eye-opening and educating articles ma'sha'allah. Also very proud that he is part of the American Muslim contingent, but of course, he is contributing to the entire Ummah with his efforts. Great post Zaufishan and enjoy your time as part of the team! Excellent news my Sister - I'm so very proud!
