The Virtues of Surah Qaaf (50)

*EDIT - The suggested reading for Fridays is Surah KAHF - The CAVE, Surah 18, which is different to Surah Qaaf, the 50th Surah!* Don't get confused!

Surah Qaf is the 50th chapter of the Quran, named after the letter Qaf  ق  which appears in the opening line. Modernists have still not attached the significance to sounds, believing that not all sounds are meaningful unless the speaker attaches importance to it. In Islamic philosophy, Allah created everything with purpose therefore even the simplest 'humm' or 'ufff' or 'Qaaf' has a higher meaning.

Surah Qaf is a challenging reminder to readers: LOOK at the things around you for those who want proof. LISTEN to the words that self-explain the nature of Allaah. LOOK at how dead plants are resurrected, water and life is balanced and the planets and skies don't go crashing into one another. The chapter then talks of past nations - Prophet Nuh's society, alayhi'salam, the people with Lut alayhi'salam, Thamud, the Pharoah(s), the nation called 'Aad, and the people of Tubba. They all severely denied their messengers whom came with the SAME MESSAGE of tawhid so Allaah justly 'rewarded' them.

Surah Qaf throws the idea of accountability to us: What are we preparing for?! Are we so deluded in artificial living? Don't we recognise all things die and all actions are recorded down? Then follows a description of all of us receiving our results - our grades - our collection of good and/or bad deeds perfectly recorded by the angels on our shoulders. Hell speaks to Allaah too, claiming it has space for much more, many more. Then a description of people entering Heaven is given - of things to come; for those who believe and love Allaahand did what He commanded: "Enter it in peace!"

By the amazing Ibn Kathir
(I) Imam Ahmad recorded that:

  • `Umar bin Al-Khattab asked Abu Waqid Al-Laythi, "What did the Prophet recite during the `Id Prayer'' Abu Waqid said, "Surah Qaf and Surat Iqtarabat [i.e. Surat Al-Qamar (54)].''
  • Muslim and the Four Collectors of the Sunan collected this Hadith. Imam Ahmad recorded that Umm Hisham bint Harithah said, "For around two years, or a year and a part of another year, our oven and the oven of the Prophet was one and the same. I memorized Surah Qaf from the tongue of the Messenger of Allah who used to recite it every Friday while standing on the Minbar delivering the Friday sermon to the people.'' Muslim collected this Hadith.
  • Abu Dawud also recorded that the daughter of Al-Harith bin An-Nu`man said, "I only memorized Surah Qaf from the mouth of the Messenger of Allah who used to recite it in every Friday Khutbah. Our oven and the oven of the Messenger was one and the same.'' Muslim and An-Nasa'i collected this Hadith.
  • Therefore, the Messenger of Allah used to recite this Surah during large gatherings such as the `Ids and during Friday sermons.
  • He did so because this Surah contains news of the beginning of creation, Resurrection, the Return, Standing (before Allah), the Reckoning, Paradise, the Fire, Allah's reward and punishment, lessons of encouragement, and lessons of discouragement. Allah knows best.

1) Qaf. By the Glorious Qur'an.
2) But they wonder that there has come to them a warner from among themselves, and the disbelievers say, "This is an amazing thing!" >>
3) When we have died and have become dust, [we will return to life]? That is a distant return!"
4) We know what the earth diminishes of them, and with Us is a retaining record.
5) But they denied the truth when it came to them, so they are in a confused condition. (A MARIJ state)

  1. Ma'sha'allah, I LOVE Imam Ghamidi - his voice is so resonant and just makes the Words of Allah (swt) sound so profoundly beautiful (as many others do as well) . . gosh, these days, I'm hearing different suwar and I feel it's the best (recently Surah Maryam) - both due to the reciter (Salah Bukhatir in the case of Surah Maryam) and now this surah.
Also, as the last ayah says, summarizing the message of the surah, as your explanation also mentions, the Qur'an and this surah especially a reminder of what is to come for both the Believers and Disbelievers, alhamdulillah! Jazak'Allahu Khairan. Great post.
