Did the Answer to My Istikhara Come in My Dreams?

dua istikhara dream arabic
The du`a of istikhara (guidance) is a world-wide Muslim phenomenon of total reliance on and acceptance of God in whatever He decides, and extreme hope in the best outcome for whatever one is making du`a for.

Ustadh Salman Younas answered the following question related to istikhara on Seekers Guidance which helps clear any false hope in interpreting 'signs' surrounding the du`a.

Question: I have been doing Istikhara for the last few days and recently one night I had a dream afterwards. I am not sure if this dream is relevant or if there is any interpretation for it with regards to problems I’m dealing with.

Answer: As-salamu `alaykum,

What needs to be noted is that the answer to one’s guidance prayer (istikhara) does not come simply in the form of dreams and feelings but in how Allah facilitates and unfolds events for an individual after he or she genuinely strives to do what is best.

As such, with the guidance prayer, a person needs to:
a. Take the most effective means, which includes consulting those whose knowledge and wisdom one has confidence in, and,
b. Place their trust in Allah.

Lastly, one needs to be patient in terms of receiving the answer to their prayers. As Ibn `Ata’illah states, “If you make intense supplication and the timing of the answer is delayed, do not despair of it. His reply to you is guaranteed; but in the way He chooses, not the way you choose, and at the moment He desires, not the moment you desire.” [Ibn `Ata’illah, Hikam]

This echoes the words of our Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace). “The supplication of everyone of your is granted as long as he does not show haste and say that he made a supplication but it was not accepted.” [Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah]

  1. Assalamualaikum,
I wanted to ask if perhaps you knew whether opening up the quran randomly is a type of istikhara or just bid'ah?
I personally feel as though it is bid'ah, but reading your blog has shown me how well-informed you are on Islam.

  2. Wa`alaykum salam warahma,

The above answer was originally posted on Seekers Guidance, and answered by Ustadh Salman, and checked and approved by imam Faraz Rabbani.

Istikhara is a set formula (dua, salah, perseverance) to be content with what Allah decides for you and to accept that outcome. It is not an arbitrary decision.

I personally am not qualified nor knowledgeable to answer your question. For the present time, read the Qur'an as the guidance is it intended for. I hope insha-Allah you find your answer.

    Z.
