Dua: When It Rains, It Pours. Asking God For Pure Water

August in England
Watching the English skies sparkle down rain this June, one can only hope it is sent with a good purpose. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (God's peace and blessings be upon him) frequently made du`a (a supplication) for and during rain because he knew its power and Who controlled it. He was aware of its blessings. In our lives we rarely stand in the pouring rain to simply feel it, or to hear its sounds. We often forget that like the rest of God' creation, the rain is a fluid soldier and can nourish, save or destroy anything in its path, if God willed it to.

And so, I memorised these adiyah (duas) to appreciate rain and use it as a way of connecting and worshipping God. Here are three short and easy ahadith you can memorise within minutes. If you've been getting truckloads of seasonal rain like we have in England, no doubt you'll have more opportunities to read them too.

Before rain:
 اللّهُمَّ أغِثْنـا، اللّهُمَّ أغِثْنـا، اللّهُمَّ أغِثْنـا

Transliteration:
Allahumma'gith-na, allahumma'gith-na

Meaning:
‘Oh Allah, relieve us, Oh Allah, relieve us, Oh Allah, relieve us.’

During rain:
اللّهُمَّ صَيِّـباً نافِـعاً

Transliteration:
Allahumma sayyiba naa'fi`a(n)

Meaning:

‘Oh Allah, may it be a beneficial rain cloud.’

After rain:
 مُطِـرْنا بِفَضْـلِ اللهِ وَرَحْمَـتِه

Transliteration:
Muttirna bifadh'lillahi warahmati

Meaning:

‘We have been given rain by the grace and mercy of Allaah.’

  1. Water plays an important role in the world economy, as it functions as a solvent for a wide variety of chemical substances and facilitates industrial cooling and transportation. Approximately 70% of the fresh water used by humans goes to agriculture.
