What Is Love - According To The Qur'an

Allah teaches us love (hubb) in various contexts. Humans can love wealth intensely or sacrifice their 'stuff' for a healthy brotherhood. I have compiled a list of Quranic verses that I use for Tafsir study including the word love, affection, and Allah's Name Al-Wadood, The Loving.

While the word is used about 69 times in its various grammatical forms, hubb is mentioned by Allah 45 times in the Qur'an. Love is more than an emotion in Islam and like the weather, a spectrum of vivid or dark colours, is prone to change. Its darker shades can lead to lustful corruption; its purer essence lead to faith.
"When we are in love, we are always thinking about our object of love. How much more passionate, when the believer is in love with the Divine." ~ Shaykh Yasir Qadhi.

  2. Salamalaykum Razia,

The tafseer from Qur'an ayah 28:56 tells us that Prophet Muhammad's immense compassion was his driving force to call people to Allah, away from their egos and towards an eternal reward. When he, Allah's peace be upon him, felt that his love, guidance and instructions were not creating many conversions, Allah revealed to him that his job was only to guide - not convert. Indeed, as Muslims we all know that Allah has control over our heart and He loves us more than anything.

"Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided." - 28:56.

I hope that helps. Jazakillah for your comment and do make du`a' for me. (:
