How To Speak

quran quotes justice beauty brave
Ten quotes from the Book of Allah on how to speak with dignity. (13 verses below)

These instructions have guided us in our office space for some time now. Recently I saw the same verses in a 'Tweet', alhamdulillah, and was happy that someone compiled them for the rest of us.

Creative Qur'an Studies

I wanted to find my studies on the themes of the Qur'an and creatively display them. I scanned through some files from ten years ago and compiled 13 Qur'an verses into a list.

          “Speak truthfully” (Qur’an, 3:17)
          “Speak with justice” (Qur’an, 33:70)
          "Speak moderately" (Qur'an,17:110)
          “Speak positively” (Qur’an, 2:83)
          “Speak beautifully” (Qur’an, 17:53)
          “Speak gently” (Qur’an, 17:28)
          "Speak deeply" (Qur'an, 4:63)
          “Speak graciously” (Qur’an, 17:23)
          “Speak softly” (Qur’an, 20:44)
          "Speak effectively" (Qur'an, 33:32)
          “Speak humbly” (Qur’an, 23:3)
          “Speak bravely” (Qur’an, 20:27)
          "Speak without lie" (Qur'an72:5)

As a craft project I will create a 'lapbook' on how to speak that includes the Arabic script, copywork space to write out and memorise the verses, and a worksheet for younger minds to write the exegesis (tafsir) of each verse above.

See my Qur'an Speech Powerpoint which has space for individual or group studies.
Since this is a translation I suggest looking at the original Mus'haf (Arabic scripture) and finding the words corresponding to truth, humble and beautiful. Allah uses the word Ehsaan frequently due to its multiple meanings. Coming from the root Ha-sa-na (hassan), the most basic definition of Ehsaan is beautification. To take something ugly and beautify it. Thus, it is the best action. To speak with Ehsaan would be closest to Allah.

Allah ta`la tells us how to speak, when to speak and why. Speech is an art form and as an intellectually gifted species we should tell ourselves to master this skill. What we say becomes what we do. So why not become 'godly', rabbani (People of God) and talk in the most elevated way we can?

Please share with others, memorise these references and keep me and mine in your du`a.
