Appeal: Help Our Sister in Need
From Verbage | by Yasmin Mogahed
"There are some stories you hate to tell. This is one of them.
About two years ago I led a halaqah of sisters. One of the women who attended my halaqah became a close friend of mine who often confided in me about her struggles. She is a convert who is also a single mother, and like many converts she had no support from her family and little to no support from the community. Because she had been previously married, with a child, and was a convert to Islam, she found it very difficult to get remarried. Her situation got worse when she lost her job and began to struggle just to pay her rent and buy groceries for her and her son. She has since lost her unemployment as well as even her food stamps. But all of that did not compare to what would soon happen to her...
A brother contacted her on a Muslim matrimonial site and they began talking. Soon they had decided to get married, and because they lived in different states the brother suggested they get married over the phone. The sister has no Muslim family and so she had no wali (legal guardian). She trusted him and his knowledge of Islam, so she went ahead with it. Shortly after the nikkah (marriage contract) the brother traveled to her city and the marriage was consummated. But the next day he started acting very strange. Two different people said he gave them the impression that he had never married the sister at all! Soon after that he left town with little explanation. She was given a divorce by an imam, but each day the story got worse and worse. Now my friend has reason to believe that the brother may have had a contagious disease. So now, in addition to being unable to pay her rent and buy food, she fears for her life/health.
Like so many converts in our community, this sister has no family to support her. Sh. Suhaib Webb is now her wali and both he and I can vouch for her.
Please do what you can for her. If you are able to donate, please do, and spread the word. Her paypal email is: adecadentrapture@aol.com. Regardless of what you can or cannot give, please, please, keep her in your dua`a.
And please remember the hadith of the Prophet ﷺ:
“A Muslim is the brother/sister of a Muslim – he does not wrong him nor does he forsake him when he is in need; whosoever is fulfilling the needs of his brother, Allah is fulfilling his needs; whosoever removes distress from a believer, Allah removes from him a distress from him on the Day of Resurrection; and whosoever conceals the faults of a Muslim, Allah will conceal his faults on the Day of Resurrection.” [Bukhari and Muslim]
